West Virginia (WOAY) The West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection is responding to a train derailment near the West Virginia-Virginia border in the Bluestone River watershed.
State officials say the derailment happened near the state line, with some reports indicating part of it may be in West Virginia.
Currently, soybean oil is the only substance confirmed to be leaking, and crews are working to contain it.
Officials say there are no confirmed hazardous chemical releases at this time.
The DEP says it’s working with the state Department of Health, emergency management officials, and the railroad operator to monitor conditions and gather more information about what was inside the rail cars.
Local water utilities have also been notified and are monitoring their systems. Officials say there’s currently no indication of any immediate impact on drinking water.
Norfolk Southern contractors are on scene handling recovery and cleanup efforts.
The DEP says it will continue monitoring the situation and provide updates as more information becomes available.
