OAK HILL, WV (WOAY) – It’s almost Mother’s Day, so one local nursery is making sure Southern West Virginia moms feel the peace and love they deserve.
What better way to spend the second weekend in May than with a trip from Wyoming County to walk around Casto’s Greenhouse with her mom, whom Leah Woods calls her best friend.
“She taught me everything I know about gardening,” said Pineville, WV resident Woods. “I’m a nurse, so I work 12-hour days. Don’t get to spend as much time with my kids as I want. But she’s teaching them about gardening, so passing that tradition on.”
This Mother’s Day immerse yourself in the tranquility and beauty of Casto’s Greenhouse, and you may not want to leave. I know I don’t.

“Hanging baskets are very fun. I think that’s a good gift or one of our combination pots would be very nice to give to a mom,” said plant expert Matthew Shott. “Mother’s Day originated in West Virginia, which I think is very special.”
Mother’s Day means more to Leah than just flowers.
“Beans and cucumbers and squash and tomatoes and other things, whatever I find here,” Woods said. “Most likely leave with a whole lot more than I came to get; which is the best part.”
With nine greenhouses, Casto’s has something for everyone, starting with tomatoes, cucumbers and peppers in the two vegetable houses.
“The other greenhouses are filled with flowers, bedding flowers, six packs of flowers, hanging baskets, containers, individual flowers that you can make your own containers and baskets up with,” Shott said.
Mother’s Day is Casto’s busiest time of year.
“It’s all worth it in the end, to see everybody’s smiles as they walk outta here,” added the plant expert.
