MERCER COUNTY, WV (WOAY) – Flowers, chocolate, the courthouse? Mercer County Family Court Judge Adam Wolfe decided to do something different by offering to preside over Valentine’s Day weddings.
What a cool way to spend this love day — ten couples decided to take the plunge.
I was there for one of them.
“It has been a really good day (that) people enjoy,” Wolfe said. “Of course, we decorate — we had a wedding planner do the decorations and the courtroom, made it nice.”
This Narrows Virginia couple has been together for 10 years and always planned on getting married. When they learned about the Mercer County Courthouse Valentine’s Wedding event, it just made sense.
“This is a little bit new age when it comes to not being as ‘have to do the consume all’ get the best, biggest everything. You don’t need to go that path.”
The courthouse welcomed all those in love.
“Had a variety of people,” the judge said. “We have two couples today who have been divorced that are getting remarried.”
Stephens and his new wife Alexa will be celebrating with a 2026 cruise. He says getting married in the courthouse is not like a Vegas-style wedding.
“It streamlines it; we’re sure of what we want,” said the groom. “The fact of how pricey weddings get nowadays (this) is a route I feel is romantic as well as smart.”
Wolfe says this is the first year they’re doing Valentine’s weddings.
“Wanted to do something for the community so they can enjoy the courthouse, a special day on Valentine’s Day.”
As long as you are together, that’s what counts.
“Doesn’t matter where the venue is, where it happens,” Stephens said. “As long as it happens, we’re content with that.”
