CODE RED: Fayette County Humane Society needs your help

FAYETTEVILLE, WV (WOAY) – The Fayette County Humane Society is in a dire predicament with its current code-red status.

Executive director Fallyn Wakefield says they attribute it to a lack of spaying/neutering and surrendering pets.

They are overflowing and cannot take in any more animals. You can help by adopting.

“Really can’t blame these families that can’t afford to keep their animals sometimes. I mean, it’s either they feed themselves or it’s the animals,” Wakefield said. “But spaying and neutering needs to be mandatory because we’re just causing even more of an issue.”

The Fayette County Humane Society is a no-kill shelter. According to the executive director, the furbabies live there until they find their forever homes. But they are so over capacity that some dogs live outside (daytime) runs and inside runs at night. You can help by volunteering Tuesday through Saturday from 10 am to 5 pm, and donations are always welcome.

“We got a lot of mouths to feed right now. So dog food, cat food help, sharing our post on Facebook,” Wakefield said. “We are reaching out to other rescues in different states trying to get people to adopt here. Sad because most of our adoptions are coming from out of state.”

They will be running a $40 special from now until sometime in August.

“We are trying everything for people to come down and adopt,” said the executive director.

“And with the adoption special they get vaccinations, dewormer, flea and tick. And we also give them a spay/and neuter voucher. And that’s at no cost to the adopter.”
Wakefield and all the volunteers provide love and support.

“If we weren’t here, there would be nobody here for these animals,” she said. “To come in here every day, they see us, they’re happy — it just makes you feel good.”
