Coal miner succumbs to injuries after incident at Raleigh County mine

Four West Virginia mining companies earned national honors for outstanding achievement in mine safety, reclamation, and technology innovation.

COAL CITY, WV (WOAY) – Ashley Cogar, a woman from Erbacon in Webster County, was injured at the Wyco Surface mine near the Raleigh County and Wyoming County border.

According to the Mine Safety and Health Administration, it happened just before midnight on July 12.

The accident is classified as a powered haulage. It’s the second mine-related death in West Virginia this year.

At this time, MSHA has not released its report.

Governor Jim Justice and First Lady Kathy Justice released a statement today, saying they are heartbroken by the incident.

“Our miners are true heroes, providing the essential work needed to energize and power steel-making in our country and worldwide. Without them, we wouldn’t be able to live as we do, and their efforts deserve our utmost respect. Unfortunately, this tragic loss highlights the daily risks our fearless miners face. Cathy and I extend our heartfelt condolences to Ashley’s family and friends during this difficult time. We ask you to please keep them in your thoughts and prayers,” the Justices said.
