WELCH, WV (WOAY) – A memorial was dedicated by the city of Welch.
The memorial is located at the second fire station in the town. So far only the site has been dedicated. When finished, it will feature three different flags, a plaque featuring the names of fallen firefighters from McDowell County, and a sculpture.
S.P. McKinney with the Welch Fire department says the memorial was only made possible from the generosity of their community.
“Everything that we’ve put together so far, even the sign that commemorates the site, has been donated. The communities of McDowell and Mercer County have just so die-heartedly come out to support this. They all believe in it. The members of each department believe in it,” McKinney said.
The firefighter memorial comes right after the town of Gary erected a police memorial back in May. The memorials are part of a project to erect four different memorials in McDowell County. EMS and military memorials are also being planned.
