Church fire being investigated as arson

Cabell County, WV (WOAY) – A fire at a Cabell County place of worship was ruled as intentionally set.

According to a press release from the West Virginia State Fire Marshal’s Office, at 12:10 p.m. on Wednesday May 14, 2025, fire departments we dispatched to the Brighter Day Ministry Church, located in the 4000 block of Nine Mile Road in Lesage, WV.

Fire crews found and put out a small fire in an attached shed at the back of the structure. Investigators from the West Virginia State Fire Marshal’s Office determined the fire was intentionally set.

Approximately 2 hours later crews responded for a second set of fires at the church. The fires were burning at each door of the church and the adjacent fellowship hall.

WVSFMO investigators determined these fires were also intentionally set.

WVSFMO investigators have developed preliminary leads for suspects involved with the fires and are currently following up on those leads. Investigators are asking anyone with information related to the investigation to utilize the state’s arson tip line at 1-800-233-3473.
