Census response rate still low for West Virginia

WEST VIRGINIA (WOAY) – The governor in his recent press conference announced frustration with counties for their low census response rate.

The census helps determine how much funding states get based on their population, and a low response rate can lead to decreased funding down the line. According to Jim Justice, many counties in southern West Virginia have had a poor response rate.

“In McDowell County today, we have a response of people that have been counted of 4.7%. That’s not good, that’s just not good. A lot of our southern counties, really low,” Justice said.

The county in southern West Virginia with the highest response rate is Mercer with 43.2%
