Cell phone fees to increase July 1 for West Virginians

Charleston, WV (WOAY) – Heads up, cell phone users: your monthly bill is about to increase.

Starting July 1, West Virginians will see a 10.2 percent increase in their wireless 911 fee.

The Public Service Commission (PSC) announced the fee will increase from $3.64 to $4.01.

However, that’s not all.

Add an 8-cent wireless tower fee and a 29-cent public safety fee, and the total monthly charge will be $4.38.

The money isn’t just going to the state.

The PSC collects the fees and then distributes them to counties based on a formula, all aimed at enhancing 911 system reliability and response times.

This fee is reviewed every two years by state lawmakers.

For full details, head to the PSC’s website and look for General Order 187.65.
