Canyon Rim Visitor’s Center invites community to 250 Years of Community: African American Life and History in the New River Gorge program this weekend

Lansing, WV (WOAY) Are you interested in learning more about the history of our region?

This weekend, you’re invited to a special Black History Month program, part of this year’s celebration of America’s 250th anniversary.

The program, titled 250 Years of Community: African American Life and History in the New River Gorge,” explores the stories of African American communities within the park from the earliest records all the way to today.

African Americans have shaped the local culture of the New River Gorge with a legacy that includes well‑known figures like John Henry, Carter G. Woodson, and Katherine Johnson, as well as the thousands of men and women who lived, worked, and built their lives here without ever making it into the history books.

The program will be held at the Canyon Rim Visitor Center on Saturday, February 28 at 1:00 p.m., and again on Sunday, March 1 at 1:00 p.m.

It’s free to attend, and no registration is required.
