OAK HILL, WV (WOAY) – This evening, we’re getting a bit of a break from the rain after strong storms pushed through the region this morning. There weren’t any severe thunderstorm warnings, but the storms made their presence felt with some loud booms being heard along with heavy rain. Beckley set a rainfall record today; unofficially, the airport has seen 1.53″ of rain, breaking the old record of 1.47″, which had been set in 1950.
Tonight, there could be a few scattered storms around, but the main travel concern is going to be some patchy fog in places that picked up rain today, but even that shouldn’t be too much of a concern. Lows tonight will be mild again, generally in similar territory to where they’ve been the past few mornings.
Tomorrow, we’ll see fewer clouds and more storms. The sunshine will feel great, given the cloud cover of the recent days, but it will also help to destabilize the atmosphere. The result is conditions that are conducive to the development of severe storms. While there won’t be many storms, any storms that pop up will be able to strengthen quickly, possibly to a point where they will be severe.
That’s what the Storm Prediction Center is thinking, and for that reason, they’ve placed parts of the region in the Level 1 out of 5 risk category for severe storms.
If they are severe, damaging winds will be the main threat, with flooding rains also in play. There is plenty of moisture for the storms to work with, and we’ll have to monitor the creeks and flood-prone areas.
Even more of the area is under threat for severe storms on Friday. With the sunshine, highs will get quite warm, generally topping out in the middle 80s. Some areas will get into the lower 90s, and the humidity will make it feel warmer than the air temperature. Take it easy if you plan to be outside.
As we end the traditional work week, widespread showers and storms will be back in the forecast as a front will push through the region. After the front is gone late Friday and early Saturday, skies will clear and the first half of the weekend looks great. The chance for storms returns on Sunday as the break from the parade of low-pressure centers and fronts is only a temporary one. Chances for rain take us through the rest of the extended forecast, but temperatures will cool off as the jet stream pattern shifts slightly to allow some slightly cooler air to enter the region.
