WOAY-TV (Oak Hill, WV): Morning temperatures are lingering in the upper 60s and lower 70s. Fog is developing as well, continuing the warm, muggy pattern to end the traditional work week. Other than the fog, the morning commute will be smooth. Skies stay mostly sunny through the morning, and fog dissipates after 10 AM. Calm conditions remain through the early afternoon, but a change to the forecast is coming. The cold front we have been tracking for the last few days will begin its slow approach into the region this afternoon.
Thunderstorms will begin forming to our west, reaching the region later this afternoon and evening. Storms will remain scattered through the day, potentially affecting football games and the evening commute for the majority of our viewing area. Due to the amount of energy available in the atmosphere, there is potential for severe storms. The main concern within any severe thunderstorm is damaging winds up to 60s miles per hour. Isolated hail and localized flooding are also in play, while tornadic activity is not likely. Storms will begin to weaken and dissipate after sunset, but that will not be the end of the stormy pattern. Thunderstorms will continue tomorrow as the cold front passes through the region. Activity will be present all day long, but will peak in the afternoon and evening. Severe weather will remain a concern as sunshine returns during breaks in the storms. Damaging winds and heavy rain are concerns in the strongest storms, but they will likely be less intense than today. The intensity of storms tomorrow will depend more on how much activity arrives in the morning. On the bright side, this cold front will finally push the hottest temperatures out of our region. Saturday will still reach the mid-80s, but cooler air will prevail by Sunday.
Temperatures will finally return to around average, only peaking in the upper 70s and lower 80s on Sunday. Storms will linger across the region, but these will be isolated and weaker. Severe weather will not be an issue for the middle of Labor Day weekend. Some plans may be affected by rain, but an umbrella or rain jacket will be helpful. It is a bummer that the rain does not completely leave, but conditions become even better for Labor Day and beyond.
