Fayette County, WV (WOAY) – The National Park Service has announced closures of certain parts of the park to accommodate Bridge Day. The West Virginia Department of Transportation has also established detours to accommodate travel.
The Park Service says that the Canyon Rim Visitor Center parking lot and grounds will close at 5:30 p.m. on Friday. Fayette Station Road will be closed at the intersection with Lansing Loop Road at 6 p.m. on Friday. All private vehicles need to be out of those areas by those times, or they will be towed.
The closure of Route 19 for Bridge Day will be extremely disruptive for travel, but the WVDOT has established detours for travel around the New River Gorge Bridge.
The detours go into effect at 5:30 in the morning on October 18. Traffic coming south on Interstate 79 should stay on the interstate all the way to Charleston and take Interstate 77 and 64. Local traffic can detour around the bridge by taking US 60 and US 16 through Anstead.
Route 19 fully reopens at 5 p.m. on October 18.
