Brenden Knox, Hendon Hooker named to Maxwell Award watch list

WOAY – The final watch list of the 2020 college football preseason was announced Friday with the Maxwell Award, which goes to the nation’s top player.

One of the main differences between the Maxwell and the Heisman Trophy is who votes for the winner; the Maxwell Award is voted on by sports media members, NCAA coaches, and members of the Maxwell Football Club.

Marshall junior running back Brenden Knox and Virginia Tech quarterback Hendon Hooker were both mentioned on the Maxwell’s watch list. Knox is the reigning Conference USA MVP, recording 1,387 rushing yards and 11 touchdowns for the Thundering Herd. This is his third watch list of the month, having been mentioned with the Wuerffel Trophy Thursday and the Doak Walker Award last week.

Hooker started eight games at quarterback for the Hokies, throwing for 1,555 yards and 13 touchdowns. He added 356 yards and five yards on the ground. This is Hooker’s first watch list mention of the preseason.
