Braxton County court hands down maximum sentence in child neglect case

Braxton County, WV (WOAY)- A Braxton County court has handed down the maximum sentence in a child neglect case.

A jury previously convicted Robin James in May 2025 of four counts of child neglect, creating a substantial risk of serious bodily injury or death to a child in her care.

The charges follow incidents where the child had told James on three separate occasions, spanning several years, that her husband, Carl James, was sexually abusing her.

James admitted to making no moves to protect the minor because she didn’t believe the child’s claims.

The same jury convicted Carl James of multiple counts of sexual abuse.

Judge Jasmine Morton sentenced Robin James to the maximum sentence of 4 to 40 years in prison.

James will also be required to be under extended supervision for 25 years after her release and must register with the State Police on the child abuse registry.
