Virginia (CNN)- A new government report shows unsanitary conditions at a Boar’s head plant in Virginia were contributing factors that led to a deadly listeria outbreak last summer.
The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) first started investigating the outbreak last July.
Days later, the company recalled a number of its products including 7 million pounds of deli meat.
Ten people died and more than sixty others were sickened in 19 states by the tainted products.
The agriculture department report says food inspectors found insects both dead and alive, mold, mildew, and other problems at the company’s Jarratt, Virginia plant weeks before the outbreak.
Boar’s head closed the plant last September.
The report also called for better government oversight to prevent future outbreaks.
