Bluefield, VA (WOAY) – After leading the Rams for over a decade, Bluefield University Men’s Basketball Coach is stepping down.
Richard Morgan has officially stepped down after 16 years at the University.
Morgan began his basketball career as a standout player at Salem High School in Virginia before joining the Virgina Cavaliers. His outstanding play at UVA led to a professional career in the CBA and overseas in Austria and the Philippines.
After playing professionally Morgan made the transition to coaching as an assistant at his Alma Mater, Salem High School, helping guide the team to district, regional, and state championships. As a collegiate coach he served on the staff at East Carolina University and Hampton University where he helped lead Hampton to a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) championship and an NCAA Tournament berth in 2006. He then moved to Appalachian State University as an assistant coach, where he helped the Mountaineers achieve a school-record 25 wins and an NIT appearance in 2007.
In 2009 Coach Morgan took the helm at Bluefield University bringing over a decade of NCAA coaching experience. In his first season his impact was immediate leading the Rams to a 17-16 record securing a share of the Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) regular-season title.
In a news release on the Bluefield University Athletics website Coach Morgan stated, “After 16 seasons with the Rams, it’s time for a new chapter. This decision wasn’t easy, but I’m forever grateful to Bluefield University for welcoming me into the Rams family and giving me the opportunity to pursue my dream and lead incredible student-athletes over the years.
Coaching at BU has been an honor, and I’m proud of what we built together. To my players—you made this journey unforgettable! I will always cherish the friendships and support of my colleagues, alumni, and the entire Bluefield community.
Though I’m moving on, Bluefield will always be a part of me. Once a Ram, always a Ram.”
Corey Mullins, Vice President of Student Development and Athletics, praised Morgan’s contributions:
“Coach Morgan has made an impact throughout the entire Bluefield community. We are thankful for his tireless efforts to help mold and shape young men into leaders. Richard was an example of leadership on this campus that will truly be missed. His teams were fun to watch, and his players embodied his own competitive spirit. He has left some big shoes to fill in the men’s basketball program. I want to thank Richard, Sherrelle, Nick, and Kaleb for their commitment to Bluefield basketball.”
As Morgan embarks on his next chapter, the Bluefield community will undoubtedly remember his dedication and the lasting legacy he leaves behind.
