Bluefield Union Mission works to rescue food

BLUEFIELD, WV (WOAY) – The Rotary Club of Bluefield, West Virginia held its regular meeting this afternoon at the Clover Club.

The topic of discussion during the meeting was about saving food. Bluefield Union Mission is a food rescue program that saves food throughout West Virginia and serves it to people in need. Guest speaker and Director of Bluefield Union Mission, Craig Hammond says nearly 40 percent of food in the world is wasted.

“Last year we recused a 125,000 pounds of food that’s 60 tons. Worldwide almost 40 percent of all the supply line is wasted, that means almost half of the food produced and grown in the world is never consumed,” said Hammond.
