Bluefield, WV (WOAY)-Bluefield Middle School has transformed a once-forgotten space into a vibrant symbol of hope, unity, and drug prevention.
The project was a collaborative effort between Community Connections, Communities In Schools, and the school itself.
The school’s atrium, previously unusable, has been revitalized into a peaceful and inspiring area for students.
Now filled with new plants, benches, tables, and original artwork, the space not only adds beauty to the campus but also serves as a reminder to students to stay drug-free and lean on their community for support.
A special tribute within the atrium honors Principal Kim Miller, who is currently on medical leave.
Known for her love of Bigfoot, the atrium includes a painting and a striking metal sculpture of the mythical creature.
Hovering above the atrium is a powerful mural that reminds students they don’t have to face challenges alone.
The artwork emphasizes the strength in community and togetherness, especially during tough times.
“I love our mural,” says Sherry Bradley, the Communities In Schools Site Coordinator. “I wasn’t sure about it at first, but I love the colors and the meaning behind it. Our students helped choose the images; there were about fourteen to pick from, and both students and staff voted. It was truly a collaborative effort.”
