BLUEFIELD, VA (WOAY) – Before Bluefield College tipped off against Bryan College on Saturday afternoon, the entire team kneeled during the national anthem, while coaches remained standing.
According to the athletic department, the team previously kneeled in one road game. However, this was the first time they had done so at home inside the Dome Gymnasium.
“The athletic department at Bluefield College will support student-athletes desires to peacefully demonstrate social justice and related causes,” read a statement. “Taking a knee during the National Anthem is a right that our student-athletes have as they demonstrate peacefully.”
Players and coaches were not made available for comment.
