WOAY – Having clinched a playoff berth earlier this month, the Bluefield Blue Jays are officially the Appalachian League’s East Division champions for 2017.
The Blue Jays began their final series of the regular season Tuesday with a 5-0 win at Johnson City, clinching the division title with two games to spare.
Bluefield took the lead with three runs in the fourth inning, adding insurance runs in the fifth and sixth frames, with Brandon Grudzielanek recording two RBI. Jordan Barrett, Turner Larkins, and Jonathan Cheshire combined for a one-hitter.
The Blue Jays will finish their regular season with games on Wednesday and Thursday against the Cardinals, before commencing their first-round playoff series with Pulaski.
Also in the Appalachian League, Princeton opened their final regular season series with a 3-2 home win over Greeneville, as Moises Gomez scored the winning run on a wild pitch in the ninth inning. The Rays have won four straight.
