Beckley, WV (WOAY) The Bill Withers Committee is now accepting entries for its annual “Lovely Day” Creative Arts Contest, celebrating the legacy of Beckley native Bill Withers.
The contest aims to introduce young people to Withers’ music and inspire them to express themselves creatively through what they hear and feel.
Withers, a Grammy Award winner and member of both the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the West Virginia Music Hall of Fame, drew inspiration from his upbringing in southern West Virginia.
The contest is open to Raleigh County students, with categories including visual art for elementary and middle school students, literature like essays, poetry, or song lyrics for middle schoolers, and a festival sticker design contest for high school students.
There are multiple age groups, with first, second, and third place winners in each category receiving prizes.
Entries are due June 3 and can be submitted by email or delivered to the Beckley City Manager’s Office.
Winners will be announced ahead of the Bill Withers Memorial Festival and honored during the event on June 27 at the Beckley Intermodal Gateway.
