Beckley residents gathered together in word park for the National Day of Prayer

BECKLEY, WV (WOAY)- Today was the National Day of Prayer. It exists to rally together for public prayer in America.

The first Continental Congress called for it back in 1775. It now happens annually on the first Thursday of May, and Beckley has organized a local event for it every year since 2011.

Multiple churches and community members gathered in Word Park today to listen to the scriptures, pray, and sing worship. This year’s theme is hope, and it was based on scripture, Romans 15:13. They hold this to bring the community together.

“It’s more of the community coming together, the churches coming together and making it happen, and just feel like we need to pray for our community,” explained Jill Moorefield, Beckley resident. “Then there are seven different pillars that the national group specifies to pray for. There’s usually like a scripture, it’s from Romans, this time, it’s all about hope. So we just want to, you know, pray for our communities. “
