Beckley Police Department launches bike patrol

Raleigh County, WV (WOAY) – The Beckley Police Department has launched a new way to boost safety and community engagement, the Uptown Bike Patrol Initiative.

“The bike patrol unit consists of four BPD officers,” said Pfc. Adam Justice. “We run through Uptown Beckley and the surrounding area on the trail, just to be a presence here in the area.”

According to Justice, this is designed to provide a more responsive and approachable police presence for the businesses and commuters.

“If we’re on a bike, you can talk to us more,” the officer said. “If you have any questions, it’s easier to stop us and talk about any questions or concerns you may have.”

The bike patrol not only benefits the community, but also the officers.

“It gets you out of the office and the cruiser,” said Justice. “It’s hot out here these last few weeks. But, it’s good exercise.”

To be a part of the patrol group, the officers have to go through additional training.

“We have to be able to do a ride through Uptown Beckley, on the trail,” Justice said. “We go down the Bypass, by the soccer fields, must be able to traverse steps and things of that nature.”
