Beckley, WV (WOAY) Winter weather can bring snow, ice, and dangerously cold temperatures, and the Beckley Fire Department wants to help keep you and your family safe. Â
Fire officials stress that heating safety is critical.
Keep space heaters at least three feet away from anything that can burn, and never use ovens, grills, or generators to heat your home.Â
Ensure smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors are working and have fresh batteries
When it comes to travel, crews urge you to avoid unnecessary trips during snow and ice. Â
If you must drive, slow down, leave extra space between vehicles, and watch for black ice, especially on bridges and shaded roads. Â
Officials also recommend dressing in layers, limiting time outdoors in extreme cold.
Check in on elderly neighbors or anyone with limited mobility to ensure they are safe and well. Â
Don’t forget to bring pets indoors and make sure outdoor animals have proper shelter and unfrozen water. Â
Protect your home by letting faucets drip during extreme cold to prevent frozen pipes, closing garage doors, and knowing the location of the main water shutoff valve. Â
In case of power outages, keep phones fully charged and flashlights ready. Â
Finally, don’t hesitate to call 911 in an emergency and never delay getting help. Â
The Beckley Fire Department says staying prepared can make all the difference this winter.Â
