Beckley Day Center needs donations

RALEIGH COUNTY, WV (WOAY) – The Beckley Day Center has been open for two months now helping the at-risk community in big ways.

Yet, there is always a need for donations: including shoes, socks, and underwear for men and women; various hygiene items, snack bags, and art supplies.

The main thing is getting people what they need at that moment.

“It is a big deal for them. We go through it quickly, as fast as we get it — it goes right out the door and it’s a different person each time,” said Peer Recovery Support Specialist Heather Williams. “They can come back and get more items if need be. But seeing how many people are hungry, are not able to have deodorant, be able to brush their teeth, have a pair of shoes that they’re walking in that aren’t wet, and not have a change of clothes for days upon days breaks my heart.”

Most of us take these things for granted. A lot of the folks who come into the Day Center don’t have that at all.

“So we try to provide them some normalcy in their life,” Williams said.

The PRSS says offering them art activities also helps so they have something to do while they are at the center. It gets them in a different headspace not thinking about what they’re dealing with at that time.
