Beckley Common Council scheduled to meet on Tuesday to vote on raises for Public Works employees

Beckley, WV (WOAY) – The Beckley Common Council will meet on Tuesday, September 12th, to vote on raises for Beckley Board of Works employees.

Public works employees proposed the increase in August following raises for Beckley police, arguing public works wages are being handled differently than corrections and that many discussions about their rates are taking place privately.

The $2.00 across-the-board increase would calculate to half the $8,000 hike approved for officers last month.

If greenlit, the city’s 40 public works employees would earn an additional $4,000 on their salaries, costing the city roughly $160,000.

Most of the funds needed to supplement the raises will likely come from savings the city expects from road salt purchases this year.

Common council meetings are open to the public inside city hall’s council chambers.

Anyone interested in attending can visit Beckley.org to access the link to participate remotely via computer or phone.
