Beckley City Council given an update on the Walton Building collapse

BECKLEY, WV (WOAY) – Earlier tonight the Beckley City Council held its monthly meeting and provided an update on the status of the Walton Building collapse on Main Street.

Currently, the city council is waiting on the report from structural engineers to determine the next steps to take. Mayor Rob Rappold says that the report should be out tomorrow.

“It’s moving slower than any of us would like, we are at the mercy of the engineers for the involved insurance companies.” said, Mayor Rob Rappold. “The structural engineers for the insurance companies are currently writing their report after a visit to the site last Wednesday. To express an interest, at the very minimum, of getting the now crumbled bricks on the Walton Building down. Which eliminates the danger of loose bricks falling on the sidewalk or Main Street.”

The goal would be to open at least one lane of Main Street so people can get back to business once it is safe to do so.
