Beckley City Council approves DROP program for police

BECKLEY, WV (WOAY) – The Beckley City Council approved the Police Deferred Retirement Option Plan, DROP, program Tuesday night.

The program allows police officers to bank their retirement and continue working for the city. The officers will accumulate money into their pension funds, which they can receive after a maximum of five years.

“This is a good recruitment and retention tool for the police, and it’s already been implemented in the fire service without any problems,” said Beckley City Recorder Billy Trump. “It has gone through vetting by an actuary to make sure that it does not adversely affect the pension system, but in some ways enhances the pension system and is a benefit to both the city and the pension system.”

The program was approved, with all council members voting unanimously.
