Beckley Area Foundation gearing up for free Household Hazardous Waste Collection

BECKLEY, WV (WOAY) – Got used motor oil, leftover pesticides, batteries? The Beckley area foundation is hosting a free Household Hazardous Waste Collection rain or shine on Saturday, September 28th, from 8 am to 2 pm.

This will protect the environment and improve the health and well-being of Raleigh County residents.

“We’re accepting fertilizers, paint, old gasoline, really all things that can harm the environment,” said communications/grant program coordinator Sam Babcock. “We’re accepting those free of charge to all Raleigh County residents.”

Load up your vehicles with anything taking up space in your garage, including a half-used can of paint.

“Lyme, fertilizer, any old rat traps or old gasoline,” Babcock said. “They’re also taking prescription drugs that are old, ammunition.”

Where does your hazardous waste go once it’s collected? Depending on what it is — local and state agencies, starting with the Raleigh County Sheriff’s Department — will take items.

“Clean Harbors will be there, and they’re gonna take the bulk of, like, oils and gasoline,” said Babcock. “Also, the Solid Waste Authority will be taking things. We have a lot of partners with this and they’ll all be disposing of those things appropriately.”

It’s extremely important to hold an event like this periodically. According to ACTEnviro, toxic fumes can pollute the air, causing respiratory problems. Toxic household chemicals can seep into the ground and contaminate water supplies, leading to severe health issues.

“All of these things, if they’re disposed of incorrectly can be a major harm to the environment. And so we’re doing this to keep Raleigh County as safe and clean as possible.”
