PRINCETON, WV (WOAY) – The Salvation Army has kicked off its 2025 Give with Joy Red Kettle Campaign — aiming to raise $100,000 to support those struggling across Mercer County this holiday season.
The need is greater than ever.
“We have already served more than 23,000 meals just in the past year here at this location,” said Sgt. Melissa White. “Between McDowell, Mercer, Summers, Monroe, and Tazewell counties, some of that came through disaster relief as well.”
According to White, they are seeing people, including senior citizens who’ve never asked for help before.
“The money from the Red Kettle isn’t used just at Christmas time. It’s how we fund our social service programs throughout the year,” the sergeant said. “We really need the community to support us so we can remain here doing what we do.”
White calls herself a woman of God because of the Salvation Army.
“They taught me how to speak well, how to take care of my personal hygiene. They taught me how to set a table and the importance of education here in this building,” she said. “It’s everything to give back to the community that created me.”
