West Virginia (WOAY) September 10 is the anniversary of the American Civil War’s Battle of Carnifex Ferry, which played a major role in the creation of the Mountain State.
To commemorate this historical event, there will be a reenactment of the battle at the Carnifex Ferry Battlefield State Park in Summersville on Sunday, September 13 at 1:00 p.m.
On September 10, 1861, Union General William S. Rosecrans attacked the Confederate position at Carnifex Ferry, resulting in a Union victory, which was a contributing factor in West Virginia becoming a state.
Several important political figures fought for the Union forces in the battle, including future Supreme Court Justice Stanley Matthews and future Presidents Rutherford B. Hayes and William McKinley.
