Bat Blitz tracks declining populations in abandoned coal mines

Fayette County, WV (WOAY) Bats in the belfry! Well, you may want to count ’em.

That’s just what the WVDNR, grad students from Virginia Tech, in partnership with the National Park Service, just did.

But rather than belfries, it was old coal mines in the northern part of the New River National Park and Preserve.

Dave Bieri, District Supervisor, NRGNPP: “So we just wrapped up with what we call our bat blitz. This is the second year that we’ve done this. Resource management staff is trying to get some information on bat populations in the park. And this is the second year that they’ve done this volunteer effort…”
