FAYETTE COUNTY, WV (WOAY) – For those trying to escape their domestic abuser, having the right resources can make all the difference.
AWAY (formerly the Women’s Resource Center) keeps the victims safe and provides for them once they get out of harm’s way. They greatly appreciate any donation, small or large.
“We accept nonperishable food items, clothing, from infants up to adult age, male and female. Toiletries, paper towels, and bathroom tissue. It’s important because not all of our grants cover everything the victims need,” said Domestic Violence Victim Advocate Belinda Hopkins.
According to Hopkins, for monetary donations, call the AWAY home office (304-255-2555), and they can also provide an address for mailing purposes.
“Because once the victims leave our safe place for them and they get their own new place, they will need extra household cleaning supplies, paper towels, bathroom tissue, and the nonperishable food items,” the domestic violence victim advocate said.
AWAY accepts donations year-round. And its Close to Home Project assists anyone who goes to the hospital for sexual assault or domestic violence.
“That would be like small travel toiletry items and leisure yoga pants, t-shirts for males and females,” said Hopkins. “We want them to be comfortable when they leave, and have something to wear home.”
She calls donations imperative because their grants don’t always cover everything the victims need.
