As inflation continues to rise, many turn to thrifting as a way to cut costs

Fayette County, WV (WOAY) – As inflation continues to rise, many people are turning to thrifting as a way to cut costs.

Newswatch Reporter Jonathan Schwitzerlette caught up with a local consignment shop to see the latest.

As inflation, tariffs, and the war in Iran continue to drive up the cost of living, everyone is looking for ways to save money. New 2 U On Main, a consignment shop in Oak Hill, has seen a surge of customers in recent weeks as locals and travelers alike seek deals on quality items.

“Especially, honestly, among younger people, probably teenagers to 30s… Everybody wants to thrift, save money.”

The popularity of secondhand shopping among younger generations has skyrocketed in recent years, especially as they prioritize affordability, environmental concerns, and the thrill of hunting for vintage styles.

“Some of your nicest things come from thrift stores that people have maybe bought and paid a big price for… they’ve used it, they’re tired, they buy something new and they thrift it, and somebody else gets to use it.”

And just because customers pay a fraction of retail price, that doesn’t mean they get a fraction of the quality.

“Most jeans are between the price of $12 to $24.99. The highest could very well possibly be 24.99 [or] 29.99. And that is for really name-brand [items] that probably cost more than $100.”

In an economy where every dollar counts, it always helps when you can find something “New 2 U.”

New 2 U On Main is located at 1800 Main St E, Oak Hill, WV. They are open from 10 AM to 5 PM, Monday through Saturday.
