West Virginia (WOAY) Appalachian Power crews are working to restore electricity after severe storms moved through the company’s service territory Monday afternoon and evening.
Outages peaked at more than 28,000 customers around 6:30 p.m. on Monday, with about 475 separate outage cases reported following damaging winds and heavy rain.
Virginia remains the hardest-hit area, with about 23,000 customers without power.
In West Virginia, just over 5,000 customers remain without electricity.
Crews are assessing damage and making repairs, with Appalachian Power expecting to restore service to most customers affected by the storms by the end of today.
Customers can report outages and check estimated restoration times through Appalachian Power’s website or mobile app.
The company is also reminding customers to stay away from downed power lines and anything they may be touching.
Officials say downed wires should always be considered energized and dangerous.
ApCo also advises that anyone using a generator should follow the manufacturer’s instructions and never operate it inside a home, garage, or other enclosed space.
