HOLLYWOOD, CA (WOAY)- “And the Oscar goes to ‘Anora.'”
The Cannes Palme d’Or winning film “Anora” took home 5 of the 6 nominations they went into the Oscars with. They left with the most coveted prize in Best Picture as well as Original Screenplay, Film Editing, and Directing for Sean Baker, and leading actress for Mikey Madison.
“I grew up in Los Angeles, but Hollywood always felt so far away from me, so to be here, standing in this room today, is really incredible,” said Madison.
This year’s show was hosted by Conan O’Brien, who started the night with jokes and his own performance.
“First, if your acceptance speech goes too long, instead of playing you off with music, we have something much more powerful. We’ll cut to John Lithgow in the audience looking not angry but slightly disappointed,” said O’Brien.
The show’s notable feature was honoring the first responders who responded to the California wildfires in January.
“On behalf of everyone in greater Los Angeles, thank you for all that you do,” said O’Brien.
There were no performances by nominees for Best Original Song for the evening. However, “Wicked” stars Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande opened the Oscars with a performance of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” and “Defying Gravity.”
The film “Emilia Pérez” led the way going into the night with 13 nominations, but it left with only two wins. One of those was for best supporting actress for Zoe Saldaña.
“I am the first American of Dominican origin to accept an Academy Award, and I know I will not be the last,” said Saldaña.
This win comes after Saldaña took home the same award at the Golden Globes and Sag-Aftra awards.
