West Virginia (WOAY) – The American Heart Association is encouraging everyone to wear a little rouge today for the ladies in their lives in honor of National Wear Red Day.Â
The association’s goal is to raise and spread awareness of heart disease and stroke in millions of women nationwide.Â
Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) is the number one killer of women, with nearly 45% of women over 20 years old living with some form of heart disease.Â
CVD is also the leading cause of maternal death in the U.S., ranked as the number one killer of new mothers. Â
Women who suffer from cardiac arrest outside of a hospital are less likely to receive CPR from bystanders. Â
There are many ways you can save a life, such as:
- learning hands-on CPR to provide immediate life-saving help in an emergencyÂ
- joining Research Goes Red to ensure women are represented in cardiovascular researchÂ
- inviting a friend to exercise, prioritizing doctor’s appointmentsÂ
- just taking a quiet moment alone to de-stress and practice self-care.Â
The American Heart Association wants everyone to remember that heart health is personal and always worth the investment.Â
