WOAY-TV (Oak Hill, WV): Showers have been moving through the region early this morning. Activity is expected to continue through the commute, making a rain jacket or umbrella useful. A couple rumbles of thunder are possible, but most thunderstorm activity will occur later in the day. A slight lull in activity is possible between late morning and early afternoon, but storms likely return to the region late this afternoon and evening. Just like the morning commute, heavy rainfall is possible this evening. Storms will last after sunset, slowly passing through overnight.
Localized flooding issues are the main concern today. There is plenty of moisture for these showers and storms to work with, resulting in heavy rain across the region. Amounts will hover between a quarter of an inch and three quarters of an inch today. Flooding should not be major, but excessive rainfall may lead to some issues in vulnerable spots. Storm strength this afternoon is limited by morning activity, but a storm or two will carry the potential for gusty winds. It is possible that gusts reach up to 60 miles per hour, which is criteria for a severe storm. Hail and tornadic activity are not expected with today’s storms. After the front passes through and storms weaken tonight, the rainy pattern will continue. Storms and showers will linger tomorrow morning, and a few may last into the afternoon. Football games may be affected by an isolated shower or two, but most activity should be moving away from the region before games start. It is still a good idea to have an umbrella or rain jacket in case a storm ends up straggling behind. Temperatures will remain in the upper 70s and lower 80s tomorrow despite the front passing through.
Another disturbance is expected as we go to the weekend. Saturday morning will be mostly calm, but showers and storms return for the afternoon and evening. Heavy rain is a possibility as the disturbance passes through. This disturbance will influence the entire weekend’s weather as rain lingers on Sunday. Severe weather is not expected, but storms will be enough to keep plans inside. As for Sunday, showers will move in and out through the day. It will not be the best weekend, but it will be perfect football watching conditions.
Monday will be the best day in our extended forecast. Skies stay mostly sunny and temperatures remain on the warmer side. Any flexible outdoor plans would be best suited for the beginning of next week. Showers may return on Tuesday, but these chances are also falling. We are keeping an eye on it, but models are trending in the right direction for the early part of next week.
