AAA urges vacationers to consider travel insurance during busy summer season

Beckley, WV (WOAY) – As summer vacation season quickly approaches, it’s wise to consider travel insurance for your next trip.

Should something happen, you will have peace of mind and protection.

Travel insurance is essential, regardless of whether the journey is domestic or international. AAA says particularly for medical sickness and or death that affects you or a traveling companion.

“An immediate family member not traveling with you might prevent you from going, and you may need that insurance to get reimbursed or get refunds,” said AAA Beckley Senior Travel Advisor Melissa Norris.

Norris says, despite a co-pay or deductible, you will be majorly covered for the insurance policy amounts.

Most travel insurance covers trip delay, trip cancellation, baggage loss and delay, also emergency medical.

“Which is very important when you’re traveling abroad, as well as emergency evacuation, like ambulatory or Medevac, that could run up a large sum of money,” Norris said.

Research travel insurance before you purchase it for a trip, so you will know what you’re dealing with. And keep in mind that American insurance generally is not covered abroad.

“Four layers of insurance they can purchase,” said Norris. “We always recommend, of course, the Select or Deluxe. Not certain about their job or things of that sort, I use the Cancel Anytime insurance.”

The senior travel advisor says AAA will sell you travel insurance whether you’re a AAA member or not, based on the cost of your adventure.

“Where they’re going and by age,” Norris said. “They will have an insurance card and get mailed a policy so they know what all their coverages are.”

AAA’s travel policy is with Allianz, a nationally recognized company.

“I prefer our insurance, of course, because it has better coverage than many of the vendors,” said the senior travel advisor. “Always weigh your options. And we give customers those options to choose for themself.”
