AAA reminds drivers to be safe on the roads as peak deer season approaches

West Virginia (WOAY) With peak deer season approaching, AAA is reminding drivers to stay especially alert on the roads this fall.

Deer activity typically increases between October and December during mating season, making crashes more likely, particularly around dawn, dusk, and after dark.

AAA says the average animal-strike insurance claim in its West Virginia territory reached more than $7,300 in 2025, up nearly 32 percent from the previous year.

Drivers are encouraged to continuously scan both sides of the road, use high beams when appropriate, and watch for deer near wooded areas, parks, streams, and posted crossing zones.

AAA also warns drivers that if a deer enters the roadway, don’t swerve. Stay in your lane whenever possible to avoid losing control or hitting another vehicle or roadside object.

If you do hit a deer, move to a safe location if possible, turn on your hazard lights, contact law enforcement and your insurance company, and avoid approaching the animal.
