We are tracking a winter storm making its way towards the region this evening.

The storm center is off to the south of the region, near the Virginia/North Carolina state line, but thanks to plentiful amounts of moisture that the storm has pulled up from the Gulf, some parts of the area will pick up as much as half a foot of snow. We expect the heaviest snow to fall from Greenbrier County to the eastern portion of Mercer County, including the city of Bluefield. There we’re expecting 3-5″ of snow, with 1-3″ in other portions of the area, including in Beckley and Oak Hill. The northern areas, such as Nicholas County, will see the least amounts of snow.

With temperatures below the freezing mark throughout the atmosphere, we’ll see only snow this time; freezing rain or sleet is not expected. Lows will be in the mid-20s.

During the early part of the day tomorrow, the storm will still be affecting our area, but the snow will be tapering off by late morning outside of the Greenbrier Valley.
Highs will be in the mid-30s.

Tomorrow night, the storm will be completely gone, and lows will be in the upper 20s.
The weekend ahead features a mixed bag of weather, with mostly cloudy skies and dry conditions on Saturday and rain and snow on Sunday afternoon and evening as another storm system comes into the region, this time from the more traditional northwesterly direction. Snow totals will not be as high as they will be with this first storm, but there will be some additional accumulation. Temperatures will be above 40 degrees in the afternoon for the first time in a while, while lows will be in the lower to mid-20s.
Next week, we’ll stay in the weather pattern, as rain and snow showers are expected next Thursday. Temperatures drop on Monday behind the weekend storm, but rebound later on next week.
