It is a partly cloudy and warm afternoon around the area, with temperatures a few degrees above the normal everywhere.
Factoring in the humidity, it feels even warmer outside – near 100 degrees in Pineville as of 5 p.m. Take it easy if you’re going to be outside anytime between now and sunset, especially in the southwestern counties. Make sure that you know the signs. Check out the graphic below and know the signs.

Tonight, we drop into the middle to upper 60s in most areas, with some lower 70s in the typically warmer spots.
Tomorrow, the warmer air stays in place, but we’ll toss a small chance for showers and storms into the forecast as a disturbance in the middle levels of the atmosphere rides over the top of the heat dome. Most of the rain that forms will be to our north, but an isolated shower or storms can’t be ruled out over our area. Any storm that pops up will feature heavy rain, but not severe weather. Any localized flooding issues should be kept to a minimum since it has been dry for most of this week.
The weekend features better chances for showers and storms as a front approaches from the northwest. The front will linger to our north, giving us enhanced chances for rain over both weekend days. But because it is to our north, we don’t get the benefit of any cool air behind the front. As has been the case for the last few weeks, heavy rain is the main concern with the showers and storms that pop up. There is still plenty of moisture around, and more will be brought into the area with the front in the vicinity.

Next week, the heat dome that has been dominating the weather in the central part of the nation slides over top of the area, and temperatures will be quite warm around the entire area, with highs near 90 next Tuesday and Wednesday. There is some uncertainty at the end of the forecast. For now, I expect a front to swing through the region and cool things off a shade as we go into next weekend.
