CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — Several NFL teams are eyeing a resort owned by West Virginia Gov. Jim Justice as a potential training facility during the coronavirus pandemic, a spokesman for the retreat said Wednesday.
The Greenbrier, a lavish resort in southern West Virginia, has previously hosted training camps for New Orleans Saints and the Houston Texans. Although several teams have contacted the resort, no franchise has officially signed on to practice there this year, according to a spokesman.
The Saints held their opening practices of training camp in White Sulphur Springs from 2014-16. The Texans then visited in 2017 and 2018. Additional teams, including the New England Patriots, have also practiced at the facility. The Greenbrier Resort has been closed since March due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The NFL continues to plan for a preseason and regular season as scheduled, with the season beginning Sept. 10 with Houston at Super Bowl champion Kansas City. The league is conducting its offseason program virtually with training facilities closed because of the pandemic.
