MERCER COUNTY, WV (WOAY) – Staff and volunteers with Community Connections, Inc. work to build blessing boxes across the area.
“I bet we had 10 organizations reach out to us yesterday, and we’ve only gotten one box up,” said Kathrn Kandas. “The weather has not been helpful in the past day. Otherwise, we would have kept installing them but, you know, the rain and the cold. We need the concrete to set.”
When everything is said and done, Mercer County will have 13 boxes and Summers County will have one. The purpose is to encourage the community to take what you need and leave what you can.
“This project was all started under Be Kind Volunteer West Virginia,” said Dana Bryant with Volunteer West Virginia. “We wanted to make it easier for West Virginians to volunteer and recognize that just by being kind, you’re being a volunteer.”
To stock the first blessing box at the Church of God on Cumberland Rd. in Bluefield, Grant’s Supermarket stepped up to the plate.
“They provided the initial food for all the boxes,” said Kandas. “They’ve been a really big supporter of this.”
The finishing touch was a pair of signs donated by the sign shop.
