Beckley, WV (WOAY) Beckley Water is taking a hands-on approach to protecting drinking water sources in southern West Virginia.
The utility has adopted two-mile sections of highway near each of its two water treatment plants.
One section is along Pluto Road near the Glade Creek Reservoir and Shady Spring water treatment plant.
The other is along Sweeneysburg Road near the Sweeneysburg water treatment plant.
The adoptions are part of a new partnership with West Virginia’s Adopt-a-Highway program.
Beckley Water employees will begin cleaning up litter and debris along both roadways during Source Water Protection Week, which runs September 27 through October 3.
The company says the cleanups will continue throughout the year as part of its ongoing effort to protect the water sources that serve more than 70-thousand people across southern West Virginia.
Beckley Water treats and delivers about 11 million gallons of water each day.
The company says protecting that water starts at the source before it ever reaches the treatment plant.
