OAK HILL, WV (WOAY) – Warm temperatures were once again the big weather story for our area today, as highs wound up in the mid-to upper 80s in most locations.
With a warm start and a fairly short time between sunset and sunrise, we’ll see lows drop into the upper 60s to around 70 degrees.
Tomorrow, we’ll turn the temperature dial up a little bit more, as some parts of the region see the thermometer soar into the 90s. I think the city leaders in Bluefield can keep the lemon squeezers in storage, but both Beckley and Lewisburg are likely to reach 90 degrees tomorrow.
As has been the case the last couple of days, a stray shower or two can’t be ruled out, but the chances are very small. With some moisture in the air, it will feel even warmer than the air temperatures, so the usual precautions will be necessary for those who will be outside from last morning through mid-afternoon. Remember the signs of heat illness and take action if necessary!
Tomorrow night will be a degree or so warmer than tonight, so there will be little relief from the heat.
Thursday will start off similarly to Wednesday, but as the day goes on, a front will approach the area from the northwest and trigger showers and storms late in the day.
Some of these could be strong, with gusty winds, but I think severe weather will be more likely on Friday. Before any showers show up, temperatures will climb to around 90 degrees again, so the same heat-related issues will be possible and should be taken into account for those spending time outdoors.
Our second Fabulous Football Friday will be even warmer than the first, and there will be more storms around as the front pushes closer. Some of these storms could be on the strong side, with damaging winds. Flooding rain is also a possibility, with a quick half-inch or more with the storms. The flooding will be in the form of quick rises on the creeks and ponding water on the roads. For now, I don’t think any of the games will get cancelled, but there could be a lightning delay for some. The chance for storms lasts into the weekend, but the number and intensity of the storms will drop this weekend. So will the temperatures, as highs behind the front will be in the upper 70s and lower 80s. For now, our Labor Day is looking good with mostly sunny skies.
