Cold Weather Continues; Weekend System Concerns

WOAY-TV (Oak Hill, WV): Martin Luther King Jr. Day will be a chilly one. Temperatures will not reach 30 degrees across most of the region despite clearer skies coming in this afternoon. Wind chills will be even colder thanks to sustained winds of 10-20 miles per hour and higher gusts persisting. Cold weather advisories and warnings will start tonight and last through Tuesday afternoon. These conditions will continue through Tuesday as arctic air remains in the region and high pressure keeps us clear of any active weather. Temperatures will eventually recover by Wednesday afternoon, getting back to seasonable values after another chilly morning. Our biggest concern for this week is not coming in until the weekend. Meteorologist Christian Boteler has the details:

Wednesday night will introduce a brief round of active weather into the region. A low-pressure system to our north will bring a line of showers along with it, dropping rain and snow across the region. Accumulation is trending to be light, with most of the snow falling in the high mountains overnight. By early Thursday morning, the system will leave us with slick roads and temperatures just below-freezing. Commutes may be affected, especially in the high mountains. Thursday afternoon and Friday will return to calmer weather before the weekend system moves in.

Speaking of the weekend, any plans are not looking good at this time. While the storm’s track and precipitation type are still uncertain, there is strong agreement that this system will be in our region on Saturday. With ample moisture to work with, this system is shaping up to be the biggest of the season. Some models have snowfall reaching above a foot across our region, but this is far from certain. Snow will linger Sunday morning, adding onto anything that falls Saturday before leaving the region. The StormWatch 4 Team will be keeping a close eye on the development of this system and keep you up to date on any new information we get. Here’s your 7-Day Forecast:
