Today wasn’t a bad day around the area overall, as the sun shone at times and temperatures were warmer than they were on New Year’s Day. Tonight, some patchy fog is possible, and roads could become slippery again in places where the fog forms.

For the first half of the weekend, we’re looking for some rain and possibly a wintry mix in some parts of the area. The bulk of the precipitation will be in the southern coalfields. The track of the low is quite a way off to the south of the state, but some of the moisture will spread into parts of Virginia and North Carolina, and some of this could clip the southern areas.

Any accumulations of whatever type of precipitation falls will be light. Otherwise, today will be a relatively nice day compared to what we’ve seen, as high temperatures will rise into the lower to middle 40s in most areas.
By Saturday night, any showers will be gone, and lows will drop into the lower to middle 20s. There is slightly cooler air behind the southern low, and highs on Sunday will only be in the middle 30s. There will be plenty of sunshine, at least. Sunday is only a blip in the general warming trend, however.
Beginning on Monday and lasting through the rest of the extended forecast, highs will rise into the upper 40s at first, then into the middle and eventually upper 50s to near 60 degrees. Quite a turnaround from the cold air that had gripped the region the last few days! We’ve once again flipped the switch to the “warm setting,” and the 6–10-day outlook from the Climate Prediction Center reflects that.

That same outlook calls for it to be wetter than normal, and that’s reflected in the extended forecast as well.

We’ll be tracking two systems that will give us rain chances. The storm on Wednesday doesn’t look to have much moisture to work with, but the second system, set to arrive late Thursday and into Friday, does.
