Weekend outlook: Mild weather turns cold and snowy

It will be a much nicer start to the weekend than what we saw at the end of the night around the region. A front is pushing through and bringing showers with it. Some of these are on the heavy side, and this was after strong winds out of the southwest caused some issues for the afternoon commute.
Today, the showers are gone, and we’re in between low-pressure systems. Temperatures will still be a few degrees above normal (although not quite as warm as yesterday), and we won’t have as much wind to deal with. There will be some sunshine as well. Tonight, we’ll see lows in the lower to middle 40s. It’s the last time period of mild and dry weather before the coming storm brings cold weather along with rain and snow.
The second half of the weekend features the aforementioned storm coming into the area from the northwest. Precipitation starts in the wet form on Sunday afternoon before changing over to snow as cold air is pulled into the state from Canada.
We start the next traditional work week with snow showers around the entire area. The highest totals will be in the northern high elevation areas, where moisture from the Great Lakes will be lifted by the mountains to enhance the snow totals there. Some accumulation is likely area-wide, as temperatures will be cold enough to allow for the snow to stick on the usually colder surfaces. For the most part, the roads will be simply slick, but the chance for untreated roads to freeze late Monday and early Tuesday morning when lows are in the lower 20s will be there.
Highs on both Monday and Tuesday will be well below the normal. We won’t even be able to reach 40 degrees on either day! In addition to the lower 20s on Tuesday morning, both Monday and Wednesday will also be below the normal. Late in the forecast, a gradual warmup will take place, driving lows back to around the freezing mark and highs back to the lower to middle 50s.
